Morning Substackers
I just wanted to do a very short note today about International Men’s day, that is today! I sometimes feel conflict about these kinds of days as we should be thinking about the important things every day. But then again, like a birthday, it is nice to concentrate on something here and now, isn’t it?
I am going to ask for a time out on all the difficult things going on, to take a moment to celebrate some of the great things going on.
What is international men’s day?
International Men’s Day, on the 19 November, was founded in 1999 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at University of the West Indies in Trinidad Tabago. Now, International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 80 countries, with the aim of highlighting the social issues faced by men both mentally and physically.
There are six key pillars of International Men’s Day:
One, to promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but every day, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.
Two, to celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.
Three, to focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
Four, to highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law
Five, to improve gender relations and promote gender equality
Six, to create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.
I am fortunate to have known some amazing men in various ways in my life. Managers, colleagues friends, family and of course the romantic part as well. Many I have, sadly, lost contact with or who have passed into memory and live in my heart as they have departed this world.
I am very fortunate to have a wonderful partner in life and I probably would not even be on Substack without his support. So I want to dedicate my thoughts about amazing men, to him, today.
Which man do you want to celebrate being in your life? And that is whether you are a man or woman! Give them a shout out, to boost their sense of self worth today.
I hope you have a great rest of your day.
Warmest wishes
Jane
