How lovely to hear this toxic gratitude explanation. I’ve often been told that the past traumas in my life made me who I am today as if that’s a good thing. I wonder what I would have become had I not experienced the traumas. Toxic gratitude simply adds shame to an already difficult feeling.

Hi Ann, it made me really happy to know I have helped in some small way. I am sorry to hear you have experienced trauma. I think often, people are trying to help, but they don't realise how their words land or know what to say. I hope that you also have some support around you that you find helpful and soothing.

Thank you for your message. Thankfully I am surrounded by love and support also having a great DBT therapist who has helped me to sort some of the wheat from the chaff. 😊

I’m learning to let go of being ‘thankful’ for experiences that should not have happened.
